About Conference

History of Biomedical Textile Conferences

It is believed that the first conference on "Medical Applications of Textiles" was held at the University of Leeds, U.K. on 6th-7th July 1981. Among the papers presented was the novel finding by Winters et al that a surgical dressing needs to be maintained in a moist environment so as to accelerate healing and reduce scar formation. Then from July 1996 onwards Professor SubhashAnand at Bolton University (UK) organized a series of four MedTex Conferences culminating in July 2007. The proceedings of each of these conferences were published in a series of "Medical Textiles" titles by Woodhead Press in Cambridge, U.K. Then from 2011 onwards there has been a series of FiberMed and MedTex biannual conferences held in Tampere, Finland, North Carolina State University, Raleigh, USA, and last year at the Technical University of Lodz in Poland. This year, MedTex19 will be held at Donghua University on the Songjiang Campus, Shanghai, China in conjunction with the International Forum on Biomedical Textile Materials.

Introduction to IFBMTM

This International Forum on Biomedical Textile Materials (IFBMTM) has grown out of an initiative that was conceived and proposed ten years ago by Professor Martin W. KING, Professor WANG Lu, and their colleagues and collaborators at Donghua University. Since that time the Ministry of Education in Beijing has provided support for the project, which is called “Biomedical Textile Materials Science and Technology, No. B07024”, (also known as the “111 Project”).

The primary goal of this project has been to develop an international network of researchers and scholars committed to advancing the field of biomedical textile materials. To this end this series of forums has fostered a number of initiatives, including:

  • Joint collaborative research projects between foreign scholars, Chinese university professors, healthcare professionals and graduate students.
  • Visitation of foreign scholars with the purpose of giving lectures and providing direction and collaboration, the writing and submission of grant proposals, the undertaking of research activities and the publication of original research findings in refereed scholarly journals.

As part of the mission of this project on biomedical textile materials, we continue the tradition of inviting internationally recognized “guest” lecturers and distinguished professors to attend and participate in this unique International Conference. These eminent experts come from a range of recognized institutions in different countries and include a wide range of disciplines with diverse research interests.

The participating professors from Donghua University have an equally diverse range of research and teaching interests, and are associated with different colleges at Donghua University, including the Colleges of Textiles, Chemical & Biological Engineering and Materials Science& Engineering.

The common thread that weaves all their interests together is the subject of biomedical textile materials and the application of science and technology to the design and development of improved commercial medical textile and biotextile products. This year we are focusing on strategies to foster improved liaison and collaborative research between academia, research institutions, government, the industrial sector and clinicians. It is only through such close working relationships that successful applied research can be converted into viable and innovative commercial products that will improve the delivery of medicine and healthcare in the future.

This year the conference focuses our attention on the following ten research areas:

  • Novel materials and biopolymers for biomedical applications
  • Surface modification and biocompatibility
  • Medical textiles for protection, comfort and healthcare
  • Tissue engineering scaffolds
  • Design, structure and performance of biotextile implants
  • Quality assurance and regulatory affairs
  • Biotextiles and drug delivery
  • Development of in vitro and in vivo test methods
  • Performance evaluation using computer models
  • Infection control with novel antimicrobial agents

Again at this Twelfth International Conference and MedTex19 , we have invited distinguished professors and well known experts to participate as academic leaders and give invited lectures on a wide spectrum of multidisciplinary subjects ranging from material science, nanotechnology, textile engineering, polymer, fibre and surface science, to biomimetics, tissue engineering, cell biology, surgery, pathology and infection control. In addition, the program includes invited graduate students who will be making oral and poster presentations on these various topics. We believe as the leaders of tomorrow, their contribution is integral to the success of this International Conference.
